Google Celebrates 8 Years of Search Engine Dominance
Search Engine Leader Turns 8 on September 27, 2006

It's a bit hard to believe, but Google is celebrating its eighth birthday today. As is customary, the Google home page has a clever graphic incorporated into the Google logo that displays a cupcake with lit candles in the shape of the roman numerals ''VIII'' designating the number eight. The company that revolutionized the search engine business has come a long way since it began its mission to ''organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful''.

Acoording to the Google website, the original founders of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, developed a new approach to online search in a Stanford University dorm room. The company first incorporated on September 27, 1998 as a privately held corporation. Google is now publicly held and is based in Mountain View, California with nearly 8,000 employees worldwide.

The original Google breathrough in search is generally regarded as the method of ranking websites which became known as PageRank. The quantum leap in this search methodology was to realize that each link on a website represents a human ''vote'' on the importance of another website. The link itself validates the content being linked to. Additionally, the PageRank method gives higher ranking to those sites that are linked to from other ''authority'' sites - which indicates that the destination site also deserves high importance.

On this eighth anniversary of the founding of Google, website hosting directory spoke with one of the search industry's most noted and influencial community leaders, Mr. Brett Tabke, the CEO of WebmasterWorld.com about Google's rise to search engine dominance. Here are a few of the things that Mr. Tabke had to say.

''Boy, they grew up in a hurry. Of any web company out there, these guys went from a little 'mom and pop' organization running out of a dorm room, to being a Fortune 50 company almost overnight. How Google was able to handle that growth in the early days and not fall apart is just amazing. People are always pointing out how good their search engine is and how good their algorythm is, but they are equally as talented on the business side as well.

What Larry and Sergey did in those early days by listening to the board, and listening to the venture caplitalists they had on board - and the venture caqpitalists taking a ''hands off''approach and letting them build the thing before they started to saying ''you've got to make money now'' - made them a success. They let them build it first. So hat's off to all those guys in the early days. What a job they did.''

Congratulations to Google on reaching this milestone. We can all look forward to the impressive achievements that the next eight years are sure to bring!
